Fact- In the late 1800s/early 1900s, when the beach was just getting popular, people used to go "fanny dunking", where they went into the water holding on to a rope
Further Info- seaside resorts would set up ropes for people to go into the water. Most didnt really know how to swim, besides bathing suits at this time were made of heavy material and weighed you down. Holding on to a rope allowed people to enjoy the water with limited risk of drowning. Plus, in the early days, there were no lifeguards to save you.
